Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy
The Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski ”is the oldest and one of the most prestigious educational and scientific institutions in the field of chemistry in Bulgaria. About 800 students in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees study at the faculty.
The areas of competence of the Faculty include to a large extent modern materials science: (i) synthesis of bulk nanomaterials and study of the structure-properties relationship of different functional materials, incl. hydrogen storage materials, soft magnetic materials, permanent magnets, biocompatible materials; (ii) hybrid materials with special properties such as photoconductivity, electrochromism, photochromism, non-linear optical materials, photovoltaic effects; (iii) quantum chemical methods for modeling and designing materials and catalysts at the molecular level, with a focus on micro- and mesoporous materials and surfaces; (iv) radical thermo- and sonopolymerisation, polymeric microheterogeneous nanophase and nanostructured materials, incl. quantum dots immobilized in the polymer matrix, polymer composites reinforced with nanofiber; (v) electrodeposition of nanostructured metals, nanooxides and polymers, preparation and application of monodisperse polymer particles, etc.
In INFRAMAT the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy offers its competence and equipment for atomic absorption spectrometry, thermal analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, high performance liquid chromatography. The project includes leading researchers with expertise in the use of the aforementioned scientific infrastructure.
