IGIC - BAS

Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences – IGIC-BAS

The Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry (IGIC) at BAS is a leading scientific organization in the field of Chemical Sciences and Technologies according to the independent evaluation of the scientific activities of all institutes and universities in Bulgaria (commissioned by the Commission to the Ministry of Education and Science [1]). Тhe scientific staff of IGIC consists of 58 scientists, including one corresponding member of BAS, 5 professors, 27 associate professors, 16 assistant professors and 9 assistants. The following research tasks are implemented by the scientific staff of IGIC:

  • Materials for eco-energy, optical and biomedical technologies;
  • Materials and processes for environmental protection and combating climate change;
  • Utilization of natural resources and ecological monitoring;
  • New approaches to instrumental and theoretical analysis of materials.

The innovation activities are focused on the development of clean technologies. The Institute disposes a modern infrastructure, including equipment (based on diffraction, microscopic and spectroscopic methods) for analysis of the surface and bulk of materials, as well as for determining their thermal, catalytic and electrochemical properties. As a recognition of its status and scientific potential, in 2018, IGIC was elected as the coordinator of the largest, newly established Centre of Excellence in Bulgaria. Named the National Centre for Mechatronics and Clean Technologies, it was founded with the support of the OP “Science and Education for Smart Growth”.
