Evaluation of the authenticity and identification of archaeological and ethnographic movable cultural valuables

Type of analysis:

Evaluation of authenticity and identification within the meaning of the Cultural Heritage Act –evaluating the material testimony of movable items meeting the criteria for cultural valuables by means of non-destructive testing and aided by microscopic analysis and identification of the technology of production. The methods for evaluating the authenticity of cultural valuables should be selected depending on the specific characteristics of the items. A combination of physical, physicochemical, archaeometric, stylistic and other methods of analysis is applied.

Chemical analysis of cultural heritage objects

Type of analysis:

  • non-destructive qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis;
  • examination of movable and immovable cultural valuables by means of stationary or portative device;
  • with a stationary device, the elements from Na to U (without the inert gases) could be determined, with concentrations of 10-3 from 100 wt%..

Type of sample:

Largest possible dimensions of the samples: diameter 30 cm, height 15 cm. Diameter of the area being tested: 1, 3, 5 or 10 mm. The tested area should be on a convex or flat surface.

There are no limitations of the size of the sample when the portative device is used

Type of analysis:

  • the surface temperature of the cultural valuables is studied;
  • temperature map of the various points in the studied object;
  • the obtained data can be used for localization of structural anomalies in the sites, as well as for localization of areas with higher water content.

Area of research:

architectural and archeological sites,

movable cultural valuables (such as museum objects)..

Type of analysis:

  • qualitative analysis of inorganic and organic substances, one- and multicomponent systems;
  • non-invasive and non-contact method; no material is taken from the examined object;
  • the equipment is mobile and the analyzes can be performed in situ.

Object for study:

archeological specimens, icons, paintings, murals, printed circuit boards, natural products, food additives, oils, fuels, dyes,construction and polymeric materials used in industry.

Scientific photographic analysis

Type of analysis:

  • multispectral capturing, UV, Vis, IR wavelengths
  • images in the visible part of the spectrum of electromagnetic waves of luminescence caused by ultraviolet rays;
  • images in the visible part of the spectrum of electromagnetic waves of luminescence caused by visible rays;
  • infrared imaging of the luminescence spectrum generated by visible rays;
  • false color infrared photography.

Type of analysis:

  • RTI is a computational photographic method that captures a subject’s surface shape and color and enables the interactive re-lighting of the subject from any direction.
  • preliminary surface preparation is not required and there is no limit to the size of the studied cultural property.
